Where the new school will be on 2nd St & 54th Ave, lived a refinery.
The southern end of Hunters Point South was a series of sugar refineries, railroad depots, and supporting industry through the 1950’s. The 1961 NYC Comprehensive Plan locked HPS & LIC into an industrial neighborhood, and only new residential was allowed after the 1990’s rezoning.
